AFARM in collaboration with some other organizations or on its own efforts completed some tasks, which have resulted in long-term impact in Drinking Water Sector. The prominent achievements in this respects are enlisted below
Contributed in Development of Jalwad and Solapur model hand pumps, predecessors of India Mark II acknowledged World over. This development won acclaim from multi-lateral agencies such as UNICEF.AFARM has completed the drilling of 6200 bore wells & installation of hand pumps along with supply of 7000 hand pumps. More than 5000 ground-water investigations were completed in Maharashtra, Goa, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, and Uttar Pradesh States for State Govts, NGOs, Corporate and Individuals especially for drinking water purpose.
Participated in Technology Mission for drinking water and conducted Awareness programs safe drinking water and environmental sanitation Functioned as Co-coordinating and Monitoring agency under UNICEF sponsored Rural Sanitary Mart Project. It was aimed at promotion of sanitary facilities in rural areas by availing sanitary material through sanitary marts in rural area.
Under "UNICEF sponsored India Mark III Project" AFARM was acted as Co-coordinating agency between NGOs, Government of Maharashtra and UNICEF. The roles played by AFARM included training NGOs staff, village youths and leaders of WATSAN committees (Water and Sanitation Committees) on hand pump installation, repairs and maintenance. Strengthening WATSAN committee and handing over the responsibility of source maintenance to them and co-ordination and monitoring of work executed by involved NGOs. Provided training and guidance to NGOs regarding water quality monitoring and water awareness campaigning, awareness generation among villagers regarding health education, environmental sanitation and repairs and maintenance of the schemes under World Bank Aided Water Supply and Health Education Program. AFARM has conducted more than 100 training programs on Hand pumps installation, repairs and maintenance, for NGO’s, village youths, and women under India Mark III Project, World Bank Project and Disaster Relief Projects.
AFARM had undertaken survey of 'Status of hand pumps in Maharashtra' in 1984. This work was done for UNICEF, Mumbai. In 1988, on request of Rural Development Department, Government of Maharashtra, a status report on 'Rural water supply in Maharashtra State' was prepared for the 8th Planning Board of the State. WWF and UNICEF had undertaken Case Study to evaluate "Access to Common Man to Freshwater in 21st Century." AFARM participated in this program on behalf of UNICEF, New Delhi and prepared its report based on one year's study of four villages where single use of freshwater was heavily competing with others (e.g. industry depriving domestic and Agricultural supplies, agriculture ruling over all the other uses etc.) AFARM's report is one of the seven case studies carried out in India and together forms the 'India Report' of UNICEF, New Delhi.
The Government of India under Rajiv Gandhi Drinking Water Mission launched Pilot Program having underlined principles of sectoral reforms in drinking water & Sanitation sector i.e. paradigm shift from a Govt. lead supply driven approach to community lead demand driven approach. In Maharashtra, the said pilot project was undertaken in four districts. GoM engaged the consultancy firms as District Capacity Building Consortium (DCBC). The consortium of AFARM, Primove – Infra structure development private Limited has functioned as DCBC in Raigad & Nanded districts in the state. As a DCBC, AFRAM Consortium have provided various services for building the capacities of different stakeholders functioning at different levels (grass root to district levels), provided on field support, technical assistance for planning and implementation of water supply & sanitation facilities.
Under the World Bank aided JALSWARAJYA project, the state Govt. has initiated Aquifer Water Management pilot project in 6 aquifers selected from 6 different agro climatic zones of Maharashtra. Ratnagiri aquifer is one of them where AFARM has performed the tasks of Support Organization. As a support Organization, AFARM has built the capacities of various stakeholders including communities residing in the pilot villages to make informed decisions, prepared integrated aquifer management plans & also empowered the community for undertaking implementation, operational & management activities. The emphasis was on supply augmentation & demand Management.
Jalswarajya is Community lead demand driven project of rural water supply & Sanitation financially assisted by World Bank.
